Three sides of the same table

I spent about ten years as Director of Operations at a land-based casino in Alberta. That is where I learned how a gaming floor really runs: staffing, cash handling, surveillance, and what players see and do not see.

Before that I worked on the other side, as a regulatory compliance manager at a provincial lottery corporation, checking that games and operators met the rules. Along the way I went back to the University of Alberta for an MBA, after a bachelor's degree in business there.

For the last eight years I have been an Expert Contributor at Casino.ca. Operator, regulator, reviewer: I have sat in all three chairs, and I review online casinos with all three in mind.

CScope

What I review

Five controls I check on every casino before I write a word.

  1. C-01

    Operations

Deposits, withdrawals, support and verification, judged by someone who ran a casino floor.

  2. C-02

    Regulation and compliance

Licences, regulators and the rules each province applies, checked against the operator's own claims.

  3. C-03

    Responsible gambling

Limits, cool-off periods and self-exclusion: whether they exist, and whether they are easy to find.

  4. C-04

    Operator due diligence

Who owns the casino, where it is licensed and what its track record looks like.

  5. C-05

    Industry and market history

How Canada's gambling markets were built, and why that still shapes what players are offered.

Golf and history

Exhibit B Among the history shelves.

Away from work I am usually on a golf course, keeping an honest scorecard. Golf rewards patience and punishes shortcuts, which is a decent lesson for anyone reading bonus terms.

The rest of the time goes on Canadian military history: regimental histories, memoirs and the archives behind them. It is a habit of reading primary sources that carries straight into compliance work.
